Pregnancy, Prenatal & Postpartum Chiropractic Care in Charlotte, NC
Pregnancy changes the body in ways that are profound and, at times, physically demanding. As the center of gravity shifts, ligaments loosen in preparation for birth, and the pelvis and spine adapt to accommodate a growing baby, discomfort in the back, hips, pelvis, and neck is common — and often dismissed as simply part of the experience.
It doesn't have to be.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is a well-established approach to supporting spinal and pelvic alignment throughout all three trimesters. At Clear Life Scoliosis & Chiropractic Center, prenatal care is gentle, structurally informed, and adapted to where you are in your pregnancy. The goal is to reduce discomfort, support proper pelvic positioning, and help your body move through one of its most physically demanding seasons with as much ease as possible.
Care doesn't end at delivery. The postpartum period brings its own structural challenges — the physical demands of feeding, carrying, and caring for a newborn can create or worsen neck, mid-back, and shoulder pain. Dr. Justin works with postpartum patients to support recovery and restore function in the weeks and months following birth.
Newborns are also seen here. The birth process, even uncomplicated vaginal delivery, places significant forces on an infant's cervical spine. Gentle chiropractic evaluation and, where indicated, adjustment for newborns is increasingly sought by families who want to address structural concerns early. Technique is adapted entirely to the infant's size and age.
What Brings Patients Here During Pregnancy
The physical changes of pregnancy affect every person differently. Some patients come in the first trimester with pre-existing spinal conditions — including scoliosis — that they want to manage carefully during pregnancy. Others arrive in the second or third trimester with new onset low back pain, pelvic discomfort, or sciatica that has become difficult to manage. Some come after a motor vehicle collision during pregnancy and need both injury rehabilitation and pregnancy-aware care.
Common concerns that bring pregnant patients to Clear Life include:
Low back and sacroiliac pain. The SI joint — where the sacrum meets the pelvis — is a frequent source of pregnancy-related pain. Hormonal changes increase ligamentous laxity throughout the body, which can destabilize the SI joint and produce deep, aching discomfort in the lower back and buttocks.
Pelvic girdle pain. As the pelvis widens and shifts in preparation for birth, asymmetry in pelvic alignment can develop. This can contribute to pain with walking, rolling over in bed, or climbing stairs.
Neck and upper back pain. Postural changes in pregnancy, the forward shift of the center of gravity, increased thoracic kyphosis, and breast enlargement, can place significant strain on the cervical and upper thoracic spine.
Sciatica. Nerve compression or irritation in the lower back and pelvis can produce radiating pain down the leg during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester as the baby's position changes.
Pre-existing scoliosis. Patients with scoliosis often have concerns about how pregnancy will affect their curve. Structural support during pregnancy, and monitoring through this period, can be an important part of managing a pre-existing spinal condition.
The Webster Technique
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment protocol designed to address sacral misalignment and reduce the effects of sacral subluxation during pregnancy. It is commonly used to support optimal pelvic alignment and comfort in the third trimester. Dr. Justin is trained in the Webster Technique and uses it as part of prenatal care where clinically appropriate.
What Postpartum Care Addresses
Recovery after delivery is rarely discussed in enough detail. The physical toll of childbirth, regardless of whether delivery was vaginal or by caesarean section, is significant. And the early weeks and months of caring for a newborn introduce a new set of physical demands: feeding positions, infant carrying, sleep deprivation, and the repetitive bending and lifting involved in newborn care.
Postpartum chiropractic care at Clear Life addresses:
Spinal and pelvic realignment after delivery. The hormonal changes that loosened ligaments during pregnancy don't resolve immediately. The postpartum body is still adapting, and the pelvis and sacrum may need structural support to realign properly after birth.
Neck and upper back strain from feeding and carrying. The position most people default to while breastfeeding or bottle feeding, head forward, shoulders rounded, looking down, places sustained strain on the cervical and thoracic spine. This can develop into chronic neck pain, headaches, and mid-back tightness without intervention.
Caesarean section recovery. C-section is major abdominal surgery. The recovery process involves compensatory postural changes as patients protect the incision site, which can create or worsen spinal and pelvic imbalances. Patients recovering from caesarean section should obtain clearance from their OB before beginning chiropractic care. Once cleared, structural support can be introduced gradually and adapted to the healing process.
Return to activity. Patients who want to return to exercise, physical activity, or work after delivery benefit from structural evaluation to ensure the pelvis and spine are well-positioned before increasing physical demands on the body.
Newborn & Infant Chiropractic Adjustment
Newborn chiropractic adjustment is one of the more misunderstood aspects of chiropractic care, and one of the most gentle. The forces used in newborn adjustment are light, precise, and nothing like the adjustments performed on adults. Many parents describe it as looking no more forceful than light fingertip pressure.
Why consider chiropractic evaluation for a newborn?
The birth process, even an uncomplicated, natural delivery, involves significant compressive and torsional forces on the infant's cervical spine and cranium. In assisted deliveries involving forceps, vacuum extraction, or extended pushing, those forces increase. Some parents seek newborn evaluation after noticing positional preference, difficulty latching, or general fussiness. Whether these concerns have a structural component is assessed through evaluation, not assumed.
Dr. Justin has evaluated and adjusted newborns as young as one day old. Evaluation includes a gentle assessment of cervical range of motion, symmetry, and any apparent positional preference. Adjustment, when indicated, is performed with appropriate technique for the infant's size and age.
Newborn and infant chiropractic care is not a treatment for disease. It is a structural evaluation and, where indicated, gentle correction of positional issues that may affect early development and comfort.
Scoliosis and Pregnancy
Patients with scoliosis who become pregnant often carry unanswered questions about how pregnancy will affect their curve, and what, if anything, they can or should do about it during this period.
The relationship between scoliosis and pregnancy is nuanced. Research does not consistently show that pregnancy causes scoliosis curves to progress, though individual cases vary. For patients with more severe curves or surgical hardware from prior spinal fusion, coordination with both the obstetric provider and the treating orthopedic surgeon is recommended before beginning chiropractic care during pregnancy. What is consistent is that pregnancy places additional mechanical demands on a spine that already has a structural imbalance, and that managing comfort, pelvic alignment, and spinal support during pregnancy is particularly important for this population.
Dr. Justin has worked with pregnant patients who have both treated and untreated scoliosis curves. Prenatal care in this context involves structural support for the pregnant spine, monitoring for any changes in symptoms, and appropriate coordination with the patient's obstetric provider.
For patients with scoliosis who are considering pregnancy or who are already pregnant, an evaluation at Clear Life can clarify what structural care is appropriate for your specific presentation.
What Patients Have Described
Pregnancy places significant demands on the spine and pelvis throughout all three trimesters and into the postpartum period. The accounts below reflect individual patient experiences at Clear Life. These are individual outcomes and results vary.
Lena W. (Prenatal, Postpartum & Infant Adjustment)
"I first started seeing Dr. Justin while pregnant, and he helped so much with my aches, pains, and body changes. Even after delivery, he's continued helping me heal postpartum and has even adjusted my baby boy since he was a day old. He truly cares about his patients and always makes us feel welcomed and comfortable."

Kayla N. (Motor Vehicle Collision at 2 Months Pregnant)
"Dr. Justin helped me tremendously when I was hurt in a car accident when I was two months pregnant. He worked hard to ensure the effects of my injuries were as minimal as possible. He was there step by step, week after week treating me to help me get to a place that was even better than before my accident."

Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is widely considered safe when performed by a practitioner experienced in prenatal care. Techniques are modified throughout pregnancy to avoid pressure on the abdomen and to accommodate the changes in the patient's body. At Clear Life, all prenatal care is adapted to your trimester and specific presentation. As with any care during pregnancy, you should inform your OB or midwife that you are receiving chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic care is not appropriate for all pregnancies. Patients with high-risk pregnancies, placenta previa, preeclampsia, or other complications should consult their OB before scheduling.
When in pregnancy can I start chiropractic care?
Care can begin at any point during pregnancy, including the first trimester. Many patients find the most benefit from beginning care early — before significant postural compensation has developed — and continuing through delivery. Others come in later in pregnancy when specific complaints have developed.
How soon after delivery can I be seen?
There is no required waiting period after an uncomplicated vaginal delivery. Most patients can be seen within the first week or two postpartum. For caesarean section deliveries, patients should obtain clearance from their OB before beginning chiropractic care. Once cleared, care is introduced gradually and adapted to the healing process. There is no standard waiting period, but this varies by individual recovery and your OB's guidance.
Can my newborn be adjusted at the first visit?
Yes. Dr. Justin has evaluated and adjusted newborns as young as one day old. Newborn adjustment uses very light pressure and is adapted entirely to the infant's size and age. A structural evaluation comes first to determine whether adjustment is indicated.
I have scoliosis. Is chiropractic care still appropriate during my pregnancy?
In most cases, yes, with appropriate evaluation and care planning. Patients with scoliosis benefit from structural support during pregnancy, and Dr. Justin has worked with patients who have both treated and untreated curves. For patients with more severe curves or prior spinal fusion with surgical hardware, coordination with the treating orthopedic surgeon is recommended before beginning care. An evaluation will clarify what is appropriate for your specific presentation.
Can chiropractic care help if I was in a car accident while pregnant?
Yes. Post-accident care during pregnancy requires a practitioner experienced in both injury rehabilitation and pregnancy-aware treatment. Dr. Justin has worked with patients recovering from motor vehicle collisions during pregnancy, adapting care to protect both the patient and the developing baby throughout the recovery process.
