Getting from Hampton Roads to Charlotte
Mapping apps usually route the drive through I-64 West, I-95 and I-85 South, and the exact path changes with traffic at the Hampton Roads tunnels and bridges. Allow for those delays on both days of the trip. The clinic is at 8814 Rachel Freeman Way, Suite 103, in the Berewick Town Center area of southwest Charlotte.
Scheduled commercial flights connect Norfolk International (ORF) and Charlotte Douglas (CLT), with a flight time of about 1 hour 15 minutes according to historical data. Confirm current schedules. Richmond families share part of the same corridor: see Scoliosis Care for Richmond, VA Patients.
Visit formats for Virginia Beach and Norfolk families
At 340 miles or more, regular visits are not realistic. The two-week intensive, or a few longer stays with a home program between them, are the formats that fit.
For an adolescent, the school calendar usually decides when two weeks can be spent in Charlotte. The brace in the published intensive cases was fitted in week two, so that week cannot be skipped.
If your family may relocate during treatment
Military assignments change on short notice. If orders could move your family before treatment ends, say so at the first call, because the plan and the measurement schedule have to be built to survive a move. Ask the office which records you would carry to a new clinician.
Tunnel and bridge delays in Hampton Roads can add an hour before the Charlotte drive has started. Leave a margin on the departure day, and book lodging in Charlotte for the night before the appointment if you are driving.
What the first evaluation in Charlotte involves
Here is what the first appointment covers once a Hampton Roads family arrives in Charlotte.
- History and prior imaging review, including every earlier radiograph and its report
- Symptom and goal assessment
- Posture and asymmetry evaluation
- Range of motion, balance and coordination testing
- Neurological screening
- Scoliosis-specific examination findings
- Imaging review when appropriate
- Individualized in-office and home-based care plan
- Repeat objective reassessment on a defined schedule
Bring standing radiographs, written reports and the dates of each film. Dr. Justin Dick reviews prior imaging at the first visit and compares it with new findings.
How the approaches compare
| Approach | What it is aimed at | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Observation | Re-measure the Cobb angle on a schedule | Does not act on the curve. Reasonable for small, stable curves, and less so when progression is documented and growth remains. |
| Bracing and scoliosis-specific exercise | Limit progression in growing patients and train curve-specific posture and control | Addressed in the 2016 SOSORT guidelines (Negrini et al., DOI 10.1186/s13013-017-0145-8). |
| Spinal fusion surgery | Larger or progressing curves | Decided with a spine surgeon. Clear Life does not perform surgery. |
| Clear Life Scoliosis, Charlotte, NC | CLEAR protocol (whole body vibration, mirror image traction, scoliosis-specific exercise, mirror image adjustment, cervical correction), ScoliBrace when indicated, documented re-measurement | Case reports and a two-patient case series, with no randomized trial. Dr. Justin Dick is the only CLEAR Institute Board member with peer-reviewed, PubMed-indexed scoliosis research practicing in the Carolinas, per his practice biography. |
| What changes for Hampton Roads families | Travel | Flying or a multi-day stay is the practical plan, and the cash-based model matters for TRICARE households. |
Published research by Dr. Justin Dick
A trip of this length is easier to justify, or to decline, with the evidence laid out first. The first two entries are a mild-curve case and the imaging study. The other two are linked after them. According to PubMed, these papers are indexed under Justin M. Dick. Each entry gives the study design first.
Dick JM, Whelan J. Cureus. 2026;18(1):e101343. | Design: Retrospective single case report, n=1, mild curve
An adolescent female with a mild curve was treated for three months with a cantilever traction system, weekly spinal mobilization and engagement of the labyrinthine righting reflex. The Cobb angle went from 10.9° to 3.8°. A curve this small sits well inside the usual range of measurement variation between readings, so this report is hypothesis-generating at most.

Dick JM. Cureus. 2025;17(8):e91098. | Design: Retrospective cross-sectional, descriptive, n=37
In 37 patients with scoliosis, abnormal C3-C4 segmental translation was measured in 70.3% (p=0.0011), and 33 of 37 (89.2%) showed Order 1 cervical buckling. The author reports a correlation between scoliosis, cervical instability, hypolordosis and buckling. The design is descriptive and from one clinic, and it cannot show that cervical mechanics cause scoliosis.

Also published: the two-patient Lenke 5C case series on the two-week intensive (PubMed ID 41640942; case series, n=2, no control group) and the 13-month single case report (PubMed ID 40062184; single case report, n=1).
None of these papers is a randomized trial, and two describe a single patient. They report what happened to the patients treated. They do not predict an outcome for any new patient. The full list is on the Dr. Justin Dick published research page.
Hampton Roads families and health insurance
Hampton Roads has a large active-duty and veteran population, and TRICARE is a common question. Clear Life Scoliosis and Chiropractic Center is a cash-based practice and does not bill health insurance, which includes TRICARE. Ask the office at 980-368-0766 for current fees and for the documentation it can provide before you travel.
Dr. Justin Dick states the aim of the plan after the evaluation: monitoring, preventing progression, or reducing the curve. For a family traveling 340 miles or more, that statement is the thing to ask for before agreeing to a second trip. Clear Life does not perform surgery, and Dr. Dick refers a curve to a spine surgeon when it belongs there.
